José Antonio Aguirre was a Spanish politician of the Basque Nacionalist Party. He was born in 1904 in Bilbao. He studied law and played for Athletic Bilbao between 1921 and 1925. He took over his father's chocolate factory when he died in 1920, and in 1927 was elected mayor of Getxo. He became the first President of the Basque Government (Lehendakari) in 1936, soon after the Spanish Civil War broke out. He sided with the republican government during the war, so he fled the country after general Franco's victory.
He lived in exile in the United States and France. He died in Paris from a heart attack, aged 56. He was buried in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, in the French Basque Country.
